That’s often what people say when a new year rolls around.

You’ve probably thought about some new years resolutions, just like your customers have.

After the rush of Christmas, some customers might vow to try and stop spending so much money.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a strategy in place to win sales in the new year.

In this post, we’re going to look at some sales strategies as well as e-commerce new year resolutions you can put in place to ensure you start your year as you mean to go on.

Whether it’s new years day itself or the few days after when people are still not yet back to work, you might find you have more people interacting with your social posts.

Having a solid new years social strategy is a great way to generate extra sales from people who follow you, as well as new people.

It’s best practice in these instances to make your social content as fun as possible.

No one likes a hard sell, especially not on social media.

So try and make it fun, but using things like memes or gifs.

Giphy has a range of different gifs for all sorts of posts. Simply search for the keyword you’re looking for and find a gif that suits your needs.

The best thing about them is they’re super shareable.

If people find them funny, they’ll likely reshare it on their own profiles and as a result, you’ll target more people and have the opportunity for potential more sales.

Offers

Just because Christmas is over, doesn’t mean people aren’t ready to buy yet.

Think about all the people who receive money for Christmas, they might be looking for a great deal in the New Year.

With the rise of New years day sales, people are always looking for a good offer.

Retail giant, Amazon, for example, has an entire page of their website dedicated to new years day offers and sales.

If you’ll look at the type of things they have on this page, it really does make sense.

Some people dedicate their new year’s resolution to getting fit or losing weight, and so offering deals on things like Fitbits, or weighing scales is a useful way for them to show they really understand their customers.

Also, they offer a range of toys.

You’d be surprised as to how many people decide to buy their children’s Christmas presents for the following year in January.

This way, they don’t have to think about it or worry they won’t be able to get things in time.

Also, if you do sell seasonal items, the New Year offers you the perfect chance to provide your customers with some great offers.

You might bulk sell wrapping paper, or Christmas tree decorations, for example.

Send a new years email

For many people, after the new year, shopping is the last thing on their mind. People are less likely to browse your website.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t catch their attention.

If you’re a savvy e-commerce business owner, then you’ve already found a way to capture your customer’s data in the form of an email list.

An email list is powerful as it’s a group of customers who have already bought from you.

Because they’ve already bought from you, the likelihood is that they’ll be happy to buy from you again.

Let’s look at an example from Paper and Stitch.

You’ll notice, the entire top section of the email is dedicated to providing helpful tips to get organized.

This is effective as they understand their customers are the type of people who like to have everything in order.

Resolutions

You might have a load of personal resolutions that you’d like to work on. Perhaps they’re fitness related? Or maybe they’re health related.

But have you taken a second to think about the business resolutions you could make too?

You don’t have to follow all these tips. Some will be more relevant than others to your business, so pick the ones you know you need to work on and get started making 2019 your best year yet.

Sort out your product descriptions

You should already know that your product descriptions are powerful ways to sell your products alongside your product photography.

However, more often than you’d think, people put product descriptions to the back burner.

They think they can get away with just writing a simple sentence about their products and that will be enough.

In some cases (where you’re selling budget items, for example) you can actually get away with simple product descriptions, but if you’re selling something more high-end, where someone really needs to think before they make a purchase, then you should make New Years the time where you dedicate to improving them.

You might think something like hand wash doesn’t need a detailed description, but you can’t disagree that when you read this description it does make you want to try it out.

Compare that, then to this product description. A lot less information and doesn’t really entice you to buy.

It makes sense then, that the second one is A LOT cheaper than the first.

Look at your data
